What does your gallery cost your couple?

Why this matters more than it sounds
A wedding gallery is not opened once by two people. It gets forwarded: to the family who could not travel, to the friend who is getting married next year, to everyone who was at the reception and wants to see the photograph of themselves. Most of them open it on a phone, on a connection that is worse than yours.
A gallery that takes ten seconds to show anything is a gallery those people close. That is not a lost pageview, it is the piece of your work that the largest number of strangers would ever have seen.
Two things usually cause it. Photos served as JPEG when AVIF or WebP would carry the same picture in a third of the bytes, and one size served to every device, so a phone downloads the file a desktop needed. Both are decisions your gallery company made for you, and neither is visible until somebody measures it.
How it measures
Written out so you can check the method, and so anyone quoting the numbers can say where they came from. Mobile timings assume 8 Mbps, which is a realistic venue connection rather than a best case.
- Does this work with Pixieset, Pic-Time or ShootProof galleries?
- Yes. It works with any public gallery link from any company, including ours. It measures the page as it is served, so nothing about it is specific to one platform.
- What exactly does it measure?
- It loads the gallery page once, finds the photos referenced in the page, and checks a sample of them for file size, image format, whether several widths are offered, and how long a browser is told to cache them. It then estimates the total weight and how long that takes on a typical mobile connection.
- Why does my gallery show very few photos?
- Some galleries build themselves in the browser with JavaScript, and this tool does not run JavaScript. When that happens the result says so, and the numbers should be read as a floor rather than a full picture.
- Is it fair to galleries that are not yours?
- The grade is based on bytes per photo rather than total page weight, so a photographer who delivered 900 frames is not penalised against one who delivered 80. The same measurement runs against our own galleries, and we publish what it says.
- Do you store the link I paste?
- No. The page is fetched once to measure it and nothing about the request is saved. There is no account and no signup for this tool.
